Along the banks of the river

 Name : LINCY E J

STD IX B

Subject : Social Science

School: St. Thomas HSS Mayannur

Learning Objectives:

1 Students will be able to determine the different factors to influence the flow of water

2 Students will be able to classify the different features of course of river

3 Students will be able to illustrate the different course of river

Introductory activity

Teacher creates a rapport with students.

During the friendly talk, the teacher exhibits different types of the stones in front of the students. And asks to them,

 Can you differentiate these stones?

Yes. We can differentiate these stones on the basis of shape, color, size, etc.

One question to you; what are the main factors that determined the shapeless stones become pebbles?

Teacher writes down the points on the black board.

Teacher corrects and codifies the answers from the students.

Yes. We already know that the four processes such as weathering, erosion, deposition and running water, are the main factors influence that the shapes of these stones.

Today we are going to discuss the different courses of river through the story of stone.

Are you ready?

Say it energetically.

Then teacher writes the name of the topic on the black board

“Along the river banks”

DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITY 1

Running river and its rhythm give us peace and joy in our mind. Am I correct?

Yes. The rivers are blood of the earth. Its provide life and existence to the earth.

Did you notice the different appearances of the flow of river? And which are them?

Waterfalls, streams, channels, canals etc.

Then teacher, shows the video of the different appearances of river

After watching the video teacher exhibit a chart and asks to students fill the chart.

Factors determine the flow of a river

After that teacher concludes activity 1 by giving an explanation on factors determining the flow of water.

DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITY 2

Teacher divides the students into three groups name by upper course, middle course and lower course.

You already discussed erosion, deposition and different factors determining flow of river.

Now I am giving you a worksheet which have contain many points related to the different courses of river and you should codifies the points related to your group.

After finishing the work one student from each group explains the points.

Teacher distributes the worksheets to them .And give 5 minute to complete the work.

After five minutes, teacher informs the deadline and invites the students to explain their answers.

After that teacher corrects their answers and provides a brief explanation about the river course with the help of still model of and chart.

CONCLUDING ACTIVITY

Teacher once again exhibits the stones and focuses one student and asks to her/him.

Can you differentiate the shapes of these stones on the basis of different courses of river?

After that teacher corrects his/her answer.

After that teacher asks some recapitulation questions

What is river source?

What is river mouth?

What are the features of upper course of river?

Where do you see meanders and ox bow lakes?

What is the main feature of the lower course of river?

FOLLOWUP ACTIVITY

Teacher suggests to prepare a note on different stages of river courses

Notes

ALONG THE RIVER BANKS

1.what are the factors determining the flow of a river?

A. Volume of water

    Rock structure

    Slope of the terrain

   Amount of sediments

2.what are the three course of river on the basis of its slope?

A. Upper course

    Middle course

    Lower course

3. What are the peculiarities of upper course?

A. Place of origin of the river

    River flow through steep slopes

    Intense rate of erosion

   No deposition

Landforms such as Valley, waterfall etc are seen

4.what are the peculiarities of middle course of a river?

A. Flows through the foothills

Both erosional and depositional processes are active

Features such as meanders and oxbow lakes are seen.

5. What are the features of lower course of a river?

A. Flows through the plains

    Active depositional processes

Depositional landforms such as flood plains and deltas are seen.

6. What are the factors affecting the intensity of river erosion?

A. Velocities of water flow

    Slope of the terrain

    Risk structure

7. What is abrasion or corrasion?

A. The rock particles like gravel, sand, pebbles etc. carried by the river rub against the rocks along the bed and both the sides of the river. This results in the the wearing down of rocks. Such erosion is known as abrasion or corrasion.Through these processes the river can polish even the the hard rocks along its course.
